FEMALE ENGINEER RESEARCHER OF THE YEAR

WINNER: DR. LILIAN KAALE

ACHIVEMENTS

During her tenure, Dr. Kaale has demonstrated her commitment to academic excellence by supervising both Ph.D. and master’s students and contributing significantly to the field through numerous publications in local and international journals. Her primary areas of research expertise lie in Food Engineering. Dr. Kaale’s influence extends beyond the academic setting, as she has gained extensive national and international experience by actively participating in conferences and workshops focused on Food Engineering.

She received a US$50,000 grant for implementing her research on mycotoxins, notably aflatoxins, during the academic year 2018–2019 as one of 20 Women in Science in the Developing Countries. In the academic year 2022–2023, Dr. Kaale was honored with the prestigious award for the best impact researcher of the year at the university level, further highlighting her significant impact in her area of expertise

MENTORSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMPANY OF THE YEAR

GGML implements a mentorship programme where mentees are matched with experienced mentors where mentors and mentees are workshopped on the crucial mentorship conversations (CMC) by accredited facilitators, before being matched and contracted for a period of up to 18 months to engage in a formal mentorship relationship. Since 2019, a total of 60 employees have participated in the mentorship programme at GGML, 82% of which are females.

Also, they have special programmes such as; Internship / Graduate Programmes, Field Practical / Attachments, Technical Training and Workshops, Soft Skills Development, Employee CPD courses attendance, Female Future Programme & Succession Planning.

She is the esteemed Director General (DG) of Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA) since 10th May 2021. Prior to this, she held the prestigious position of Director at the Centre for Development and Transfer of Technology, where she was responsible for all matters related to the transfer, adaptation, and development of technology, including assessing and choosing imported technology. Her exceptional leadership qualities have earned her recognition as a visionary and decisive leader.

Her remarkable abilities in problem-solving and conflict resolution have consistently proven her effectiveness in overcoming challenges. As a leader, she serves as an inspiration to her subordinates, fostering a strong sense of teamwork and creativity among them. She actively contributes to the professional growth of others through mentoring and encouragement, creating an environment that nurtures interest and inspires personal and collective development.

BEST PROJECT FROM FEMALE GRADUATE ENGINEER OF THE YEAR

WINNER: HAJI NYAZARA MGENI: SMART FISHING GEAR

ACHIVEMENTS

Nyazara designed a Smart fishing gear which enables real-time monitoring of fishing activities, helping fishers to make informed decisions about where and when to fish. This data-driven approach reduces overfishing and ensures the long-term viability of fish stocks, contributing to sustainable resource management. By integrating smart sensors and cameras, the gear can distinguish target species from non-target species, reducing bycatch and minimizing the unintentional capture of endangered or juvenile marine life. Big up to this outstanding idea.

BEST WOMAN ENGIENEER LED COMPLETED PROJECT OF THE YEAR

WINNER: ENG. ROSAMYSTICA LUTEGANYA: SGR TRANSMISSION LINE FOR ELECTRIFICATION

Rose Luteganya is a highly accomplished Project Manager with a remarkable track record in overseeing major infrastructure projects. As the Project Manager for the construction of the Standard Gauge railway line (SGR) from Morogoro to Dodoma, she showcased exceptional project leadership and management skills. Her full involvement in the project ensured its seamless execution, and she consistently provided insightful guidance and direction to the team. Through her effective project team management and collaborative approach, she fostered a cohesive and motivated workforce, resulting in the successful completion of the SGR transmission line.

SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR

WINNER: DAR ES SALAAM INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (DIT): COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG) PROJECT

ACHIVEMENTS

A compressed natural gas (CNG) bajaji (three wheels motor circle) project is outstanding due to its environmental benefits, cost savings, and energy independence. CNG vehicles emit fewer greenhouse gases and harmful pollutants, contributing to improved air quality and reduced carbon footprint. They also offer potential cost savings for vehicle owners and operators, as CNG is generally less expensive than gasoline or diesel. The project drives technological advancements, promotes infrastructure development, and diversifies the vehicle fleet, making it a pivotal solution in the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
